Lough View Integrated Primary and Nursery School was founded in September 1993 by a group of parents who wanted an alternative to the segregated education that was provided in the locality. At that time, there were only two integrated primary schools in Belfast and demand far outstripped the number of places available. Lough View's establishment provided an integrated education opportunity for parents in Castlereagh and the greater Belfast area that extends beyond the council area's boundaries.

The Lough View steering group met throughout 1992 to plan the school. Public meetings demonstrated that local interest was high enough to justify opening a school but it proved difficult to find a site. Primary schools are nowadays required to have almost three acres of land, which can be hard to locate in a city. Quite by chance, Lagan College was ceasing to use a building on its original site on Church Road and this became Lough View's home!

The school duly opened with 2 members of staff and 24 children and since then has proved an amazing success story. From humble beginnings, enrolment has grown steadily and the school has undergone several phases of building as new classrooms and other facilities have been added. Our present enrolment is around 420 with 14 primary classes plus a 52 place nursery.

Maureen Butler was the founding Principal and led the school until her retirement in 2009. Her determined leadership played a vital role in the successful evolution of the school as has the commitment of Lough View staff past and present.

Today Lough View is a thriving and exciting integrated primary school where children of all traditions and backgrounds are cherished equally, supported and challenged to achieve the best they can. This is an achievement that everyone who has played a part in the story of Lough View thus far, can take pride in!

Our wonderful school is 30 years old this year! What an amazing achievement and journey so far! Recently some of the Y6 pupils reminded us in assembly about just what it means to be part of our integrated community. Thank you to everyone who has played their part in making Lough View such a special place.

Go team Lough View!
